How does Online Counseling work?

You are busy and don't have time to go to counseling?

You live in a rural area with a shortage of mental health professionals?

You travel a lot, and going to the same place every week is not something you can do?

You just want to do therapy in your own space?

In this case, online counseling is for you!

How do we meet?

We meet on an online platform that you can access both from your computer or your smartphone. We can talk and see each other staying in our separate spaces very often thousands of miles away.

How does online therapy work?

The answer is simple: distance does not exist for feelings. We do not have to be in the same room to understand each other and connect emotionally.

What kinds of online counseling exist?

There are different options for online counseling: video, phone and chat. I consider video call the most effective form of online counseling, and it is the type of online counseling I offer.

What happens during the call?

During a video call, we can see and hear each other, so this famous body language everyone likes to talk about exists on the screen, too. It's just different because it's not "body" language per se, it's more of "face" language. It works similarly!

Why do you choose to work online?

I started working as a counselor in a traditional office. Then I moved, and decided to try working online. I found out that it worked better. I was more effective as a counselor. Since I realized that, I moved my whole practice online.

Benefits of Online Counseling

You don't have to go anywhere in particular, spend time driving in traffic or be at a certain place at a certain time.

Economy of time.

You don't have to spend time getting to my office and waiting there. You can just fit our session right into your day without significantly changing things.

Economy of money.

Driving and getting places is an expense we usually don't think about. In addition, you won't have to late cancel sessions and pay late cancellation fee if you cannot get to the office. We can meet wherever you are.

Location flexibility.

We don't have to be in the same city, state or even country. If you travel or move, we can keep working together.

Note: In the US I only work in Minnesota and Oregon due to the fact that mental health license is state-based so Minnesota and Oregon are the only states I am licensed to practice.

Limitations of Online Counseling

You have to be comfortable enough with your computer or smartphone to get on the online platform and feel comfortable navigating it.

In addition, technology can fail, or not work properly. For that case, it is nice to have a back up plan.

Internet Speed.

The quality of your internet has to be sufficient for a video session. Most of the time, it's not an issue, but sometimes it is.

Private Space.

To keep your privacy during session, you will need a space where nobody will interfere or interrupt. It could be your house, your room or your car.
